I don’t know about you but for me there’s something so satisfying about making a sauce or condiment, that I usually buy pre-made, from scratch. This Homemade Honey Garlic Barbecue Sauce is our family’s favourite homemade barbecue sauce and I know you’re going to love it too!
We love sweet and savoury flavours together and this Homemade Honey Garlic Barbecue Sauce is the perfect marriage of salty and sweet! We love slathering it on burgers, ribs, and grilled chicken, and I even keep a jar of it in the fridge for dipping things like potato wedges or meatballs – our kids love to do this!

Homemade Honey Garlic Barbecue Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups ketchup I use low-sodium, low-sugar ketchup
- 4 cloves garlic, pressed or finely minced
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup liquid honey or other vegan substitute
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
- a dash of hot sauce I use Sriracha
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
- a dash of finely ground black pepper
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a pot over medium-low heat.
- Whisk everything together well to combine, and to continue to whisk almost constantly (but not vigorously) as the mixture heats up and begins to bubble.
- Once the mixture reached a hard boil, reduce the heat to low and continue whisking until the sauce is thick, glossy and dark in colour (it will thicken and darken as it cooks and reduces).
- Once the sugar granules have dissolved and the sauce is thick, glossy and dark in colour, remove it from the heat and transfer it to a heat-safe glass jar or container. Let cool to room temperature before storing in the fridge and using on all your favourite barbecued meats.

I’m with you, I enjoy making my own condiments. The ability to play with flavor is my favorite part. Except ketchup, I dislike making it.

Thank you for this recipe! I love to make my own sauces because I can control the ingredients. This is important to me because I am gluten free.
I did tweak the recipe a bit. I used hot honey, increases the smoked paprika to 3 teaspoons and added 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper because I knew I would want more heat.
I love the garlicky flavor and the extra heat made it perfect for me!
Chrissie says
Thanks so much! Glad you love it as much as we do! 🙂

would there be a botulism risk if storing this?
Chrissie says
It needs to be stored in the fridge and consumed within a few weeks to avoid any risk.
Jim says
I would like to make this bbq sauce but like to know if i put the sauce in a hot water bath for twenty five minutes will it store like home made pickle or chow.
Chrissie says
I can’t comment on canning procedures as I always make this fresh. Sorry! 🙂
Joan Buswell says
I did some research, and the acis from both the vinegar in the ketchup and from the the red wine vinegar should allow for canning
Phyllis B. says
Just made it for pork ribs and chicken on Easter 4.12.2020. Sample taste is amazing! Can’t wait to get it on meat😊🌻

Tried this and LOVE it! I’m just wondering if it could be frozen in small batches nod thawed out as needed, ie; ice cube trays or containers of similar size.
Chrissie says
Yes, it can be frozen.

Sauce is very good, but I found a heaping tbsp of butter stirred into the sauce after you have cooked it on the stovetop, makes it even more delicious. Yummy on the oven baked ribs. Cooking them on the bbq seems to dry them out a bit. Cooking them in the oven leaves quite a bit of the sauce on them making them more moist & delicious.
The Busy Baker says
Thanks for your feedback!!🙂

Your sauce was delicious! I also added a jalepeno (but not all the seeds) to the pot to it gave it a little more zip, which is what we were looking for. It was delicious on our chicken legs and thighs. Thanks for sharing!
The Busy Baker says
You’re welcome Anne Marie!! Really glad it turned out delicious!🙂
