They’re perfectly savoury, meaty and filling, and they couldn’t be easier to make! Skip the frozen pre-made appetizer section and those generic store-bought appetizers and make these Pigs in a Blanket yourself at home with only a few basic ingredients!
Pigs in a Blanket are an appetizer or finger food recipe made from mini pork sausages or cocktail wieners and a pastry dough that’s usually soft and flaky. They can be made with homemade or store-bought dough. We like using puff pastry dough from the frozen section of the grocery store because it’s inexpensive and saves so much time and effort.
Pigs in a Blanket can be served with many different dipping sauces, topped with sesame seeds or poppy seeds before baking for a nice presentation, and they make a great party food because they can be eaten without a knife and fork!
- a pizza cutter, pastry cutter, or a sharp knife
- a baking sheet

To make this recipe you’ll need these ingredients:

- Cheese: Insert a small piece of cheese, such as cheddar or mozzarella, into the dough with the sausage before wrapping.
- Vegetarian: Use vegetarian or vegan sausages instead of meat-based sausages.
- Bacon: Wrap each cocktail wiener in a slice of bacon before rolling it in the dough and baking.
- Breakfast: Substitute the cocktail wieners for breakfast sausages and serve with a side of scrambled eggs and some maple syrup for dipping.
- Spicy: Add some heat by wrapping the sausages in dough sprinkled with chili powder, cayenne pepper, or adding a slice of jalapeno pepper inside each one.
- Mini pizza rolls: Replace the sausages with small pieces of pepperoni and cheese, then wrap them in dough and serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

Follow these steps for the perfect easy appetizer!
- Start with store-bought puff pastry.
No need to make your own pastry dough at home – pick up some store bought puff pastry for the perfect flaky pigs in a blanket!
- Choose your favourite cocktail sausages.
We love a good cocktail wiener, but if you prefer a smoked sausage go ahead and use those instead. Just be sure to choose one that’s cooked through already and not raw.
- Add some mustard.
Mustard adds so much flavour to this recipe, so choose your favourite. We love to use dijon or our favourite honey mustard.
- Pinch the dough together around the sausages.
To prevent the dough from coming apart while baking, pinch it well and tuck it underneath before baking.
- Don’t forget the egg wash.
Brushing the tops with egg wash before baking creates a gorgeous golden brown crust on top!

Pigs in a Blanket
Recipe: Equipment
Recipe: Ingredients
- 36 small cocktail wieners (or use mini smoked sausages)
- 2 pounds puff pastry dough (we recommend buying it in sheets, already rolled out)
- 3 tablespoons dijon mustard (or use honey mustard for more sweetness)
- 1 egg
Recipe: Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare 1-2 large baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.
- Place the rolled out puff pastry dough on your work surface and use a pizza cutter or knife to cut it into 36 small rectangles that are approximately 1/2 inch shorter than the cocktail wieners you're using (so the wiener sticks out 1/4 inch on each end) and long enough to wrap around the cocktail wiener with some extra to pinch together.
- Because different brands of sausages and cocktail wieners are slightly different in size, it's impossible to give an exact measurement for slicing the puff pastry dough.
- Brush each piece of dough with a small amount of mustard and then place one cocktail wiener on top of the mustard and wrap the dough around the wiener, pinching the ends of the dough together well. Pinching the dough together well will prevent the dough from breaking apart during the baking process.
- Place each one on the prepared baking sheet(s) with the seam of the dough facing down.
- Whisk the egg in a bowl and add 1-2 tablespoons of water to it, whisking well. Brush the egg wash over each one before baking.
- Bake for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Serve immediately.
