Estimated reading time: 8 minutes

When it comes to comfort food, garlic bread is right at the top of our list! There’s nothing better than tucking into a bowl of spaghetti and meat sauce with a thick slice of garlic bread dripping with garlic butter, and this homemade version is the absolute BEST we’ve ever tried! It tastes even better than the garlic bread from the grocery store deli (you know, the ones in those foil pouches?!), and it’s almost as easy to make with only 4 basic, simple ingredients you probably already have on hand. It’s a recipe we’ve made hundreds of times and we know you’re going to find yourself making it again and again too!

Garlic bread is a simple side dish made with fresh bread, butter, garlic, and herbs. The bread is sliced, spread with a flavourful garlic butter mixture, then baked in foil until the outside is crisp and the inside is soft and oh so buttery. It is a classic side we love serving with our favourite pasta dishes, soups, or even salads, and it is one of the easiest crowd-pleasing sides you can make at home in just a couple minutes. Homemade garlic bread tastes fresher and more flavourful than store-bought versions because you can control the quality of the bread and the amount of garlic and butter, and you can add additional ingredients like herbs or cheese to make it your own.

This recipe is one of our family’s favourites for so many reasons,. Here are just a few!
- It’s easy to make. Just slice, mix, spread, and bake!
- It’s inexpensive. A loaf of bread and a few pantry staples easily turn into a restaurant-style side dish!
- It pairs with everything! Pasta, grilled meats, soups, or salads, garlic bread goes with almost everything!
- It’s customizable. Add extra garlic, switch up the herbs, or use a different type of bread for something a little different!
- It’s baked, not broiled. The foil wrapping ensures the butter melts evenly into every slice while keeping the bread moist inside and crisp on the outside.
- It’s better than store-bought. Fresh ingredients mean you get more flavour without any preservatives.

If you want to take this homemade garlic bread to the next level, here’s all our best PRO tips!
A large French or Italian loaf has the right structure and flavour for garlic bread. Avoid very soft sandwich bread, which does not hold up as well.
Cut slices about 3/4-inch thick so they crisp on the outside and stay soft in the middle.
Make sure the butter is at room temperature so it mixes smoothly with the garlic and herbs.
Freshly pressed garlic gives the best flavour. Pre-minced garlic can taste dull.
This traps heat and ensures the butter melts evenly through the loaf.
Garlic bread tastes best straight from the oven while the butter is still melted.

If you’re running into trouble when making homemade garlic bread, here are some solutions we recommend for common issues:
You may have used butter with too much water in it. Choose high quality butter because high quality butter contains at least 80% fat and less water. Cheaper butter often contains more water which can create a soggy texture.
Check your baking time. Over-baking can dry the loaf. Cover fully in foil to prevent moisture loss.
Try sautéing the garlic briefly in butter before mixing to mellow the flavour, OR you could use roasted garlic instead of fresh. Roasted garlic’s flavour is much more mellow than fresh and it’s an easy way to add garlic flavour to your favourite dishes in a way that’s not overpowering.
Unwrap the foil for the last few minutes of baking to allow the crust to brown.

Here’s how to make homemade garlic bread – the easy way!
- Get ready and prepare the bread.
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Slice the French bread into 3/4-inch slices (about 12 slices per loaf).
- Make the butter mixture.
In a small bowl, combine the butter, garlic and parsley until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Spread the butter onto the slices of bread
Spread a generous amount of the butter mixture onto one side each of the slices of French bread and place them back into the shape of the loaf (this will ensure there is some of the butter mixture between all the slices).
- Wrap, bake, and serve.
Wrap the loaf tightly in aluminum foil and bake on a baking sheet in the middle of the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is crispy and the butter has melted and soaked into the bread. Serve immediately.

Can I make garlic bread ahead of time?
Yes. Assemble the loaf with the garlic butter, wrap it in foil, and refrigerate until ready to bake.
Can I freeze garlic bread?
Yes. Spread the butter mixture on the slices, wrap tightly with foil, place it in a freezer bag and freeze before baking. Bake straight from frozen (removing the bag), adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
Can I use different bread?
Definitely. Baguettes, sourdough, or Italian loaves all work well. Just adjust the slicing and baking time for the size of the loaf.
How do I reheat garlic bread?
Wrap leftovers in foil and reheat in a 175°C or 350°F oven for about 10 minutes until warmed through.
Can I add cheese?
Yes. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella or Parmesan into the butter mixture before spreading it between the bread slices. This will create a super delicious cheesy garlic bread.

Hope you enjoy it!!
I love a good easy side dish that pairs well with almost anything!
Thanks so much!
My family would devour this! Something I could pair with anything pasta related.
Absolutely! Hope you enjoy it!
I have been making a similar version for years. I add parmesan cheese to butter mixture then butter up both sides of slices, place on lg cookie sheet, bake at 350 on convection until golden. Sooooo yummy
Adding cheese sounds delicious! 🙂
How long?
Looks wonderful! I am a little confused with the recipe and the video. The video calls for unsalted butter, for you to add salt. How much salt is added? I can’t wait to try this!
I use about 1/4 teaspoon with unsalted butter, but you can use up to 1/2 teaspoon, depending on your taste.
Hi Chrissy,
Do you refrigerate the leftovers and warm them up in a small toaster oven? How long will it keep in the fridge?
Thanks! Look forward to trying it.
Yes you can do that. I store it in the fridge for about 2 days maximum. And it freezes well too, before baking.
I was scrolling comments hoping someone would mention if it works to freeze this. THANKS!
Thank you for the time for taking the time to leave your feedback!
Trying this tonight!!!
Hi there!
Great recipe i love it, i love how you also include the ingredients of the French loaf! But I’m quite confused, maybe the use of Western English differs slightly from mine which is Southern African.
When you say “Spread a generous amount of the butter mixture onto one side each of the slices of French bread and place them back into the shape of the loaf (this will ensure there is some of the butter mixture between the slices).” i am so confused, when you say ” onto one side each of the slices of French bread” do you mean on the crusty side or the the actual bread side? . Can you please include a pic or better yet a video?
Please and so sorry to be a bother, and thank you so much for your kind cooperation.
I’ve added a video to the post so you can follow along 🙂 Enjoy!
This looks absolutely amazing! Cannot wait to make this next week! Definitely want to try it out at our next Bimbo dinner party.
Thanks Alisha!🙂
I love that trick to shape them again and bake. It really helps. Love those crisp garlic bread. Thank you for the idea.
Looks delicious ! I was wondering if you could post recipes for school lunches? I’m trying to eat healthier while trying to balance out homework and exercise and I would like some simple, quick and healthy lunch recipes. Thanks 🙂
Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂
Love this recipe! I’ve made this 3-4 times and absolutely love it. I also make my own french bread since it’s easier and cheaper to make my own 🙂 A friend of mine also tried this recipe a few days ago and also enjoyed it.
Oh, that sounds even more delicious!!🙂
I like to add some olive oil to the mixture make it a bit healthier, plus it absorbs nicely into the bread. I prefer to thickly slice the bread, lay it flat under the broiler on a baking sheet to give it a toasted texture. This works nicely if you add parmesan.
I love that addition! Thanks so much for your positive feedback on the recipe!🙂
Can I make ahead and freeze,if so how and what temperature would you use, thanks
Yes! You can thaw it to room temperature before baking as directed in the recipe.
I’ve been making this always everyday since my kids keep asking for it. I use french bread from Walmart bakery that’s only 1$ each. I spread some of the butter mixture on top and sprinkle kraft Grated parmesan cheese and before I bake it in the oven and it turned out really good.
We’re so happy you and your family enjoyed it! Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback!
Absolutely agree! Garlic bread is a classic that brings everyone to the table, and the fact that it’s so easy to make is a huge bonus. Pairing it with Italian dishes makes any meal feel complete, from pasta nights to cozy family dinners. This is one recipe that will definitely become a staple!
So happy to hear that! Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.
