We are officially half way through January right now and it is blowing my mind! And not only am I thinking about how fast January is going, I’m also thinking about how fast Valentine’s Day is creeping up on us!! We don’t go crazy for Valentine’s Day in our house most years, but I always like to do a few fun crafts or baking projects with the kids and this year we’ll be making these Soft and Chewy Red Velvet Sugar Cookies for SURE!
I’ve shared a few of my favourite Valentine’s Day themed recipes with you in the past, like these Skinny Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Cups, or these Valentine’s Day Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Treats, but this year I’m kicking things up a notch with these Soft and Chewy Red Velvet Sugar Cookies. Because, who needs chocolate on Valentine’s Day when you have red velvet, am I right??!?
I’ve always been fascinated by red velvet – it’s just such a gorgeous colour combination with deep red and white and the flavour is just amazing. Chocolate for Valentine’s Day is so overrated (in my humble opinion) and these Soft and Chewy Red Velvet Sugar Cookies are just the recipe you need for the perfect special Valentine’s Day treat!

Soft and Chewy Red Velvet Sugar Cookies

For the cookies:
- 1 box Red Velvet Cake Mix (16.5 oz or 468 grams)
- 2/3 cup all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt
- 2 eggs
For the frosting:
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 100 grams cream cheese (approximately 3.5 oz)
- 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted to remove any lumps
Recipe: Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees (175 degrees Celsius).
- Add the cake mix, flour, oil, sour cream, and eggs to a large bowl and mix on medium speed with an electric mixer until well combined.
- Roll the dough one tablespoon at a time (use a cookie scoop to ensure the cookies are all the same size) in your hands and place on a parchment lined baking sheet, flattening each ball with the flat bottom of a glass or measuring cup.
- Bake for 8 to 9 minutes (I bake for 8 and a half minutes) until the cookies just lose their shine.
- Cool on the baking tray for 5-10 minutes and transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
- Make the frosting by whipping the cream cheese and butter on high speed until light and fluffy.
- Add the powdered sugar and whip until the mixture is fluffy and spreadable.
- Frost the cooled cookies with the back of a small spoon or a small offset spatula and enjoy!

I was wondering if you could roll out the whole batch of cookie mix and use a heart shaped cookie cutter to make the cookies heart shaped? If so would you cook them for the same time above or a different time? Thanks in advance!
The baking time would be the same, however this dough might be difficult to roll out since it’s a sticky dough.
Made these cookies today for first time. They were really fast and easy to make. I found the dough to sticky to work with so I refrigerated the dough for about 45 minutes before rolling it into balls for baking. Comments from my peanut gallery were: the cookie is amazing, it’s so moist, it felt like heaven. It goes without saying that I will be making this cookie a lot more in the future.
