I don’t know about you but in our family I’m always looking for delicious and healthy ways to make my food prep easier. A big batch of this Homemade Granola is my breakfast and snack solution most weeks – it takes me under 30 minutes to make, our family LOVES it, and the flavour possibilities are endless!
Our kids enjoy this homemade granola on top of their favourite low-sugar yogurt with some fresh berries and banana slices, and my husband has even been known to enjoy it on ice cream in the evening. I make a big batch at the beginning of the week and I don’t have to think about it again. And the best part is, it’s MUCH lower in sugar than traditional store-bought granolas and it contains only whole-food ingredients you can easily find at your local supermarket.

How long can I store homemade granola?
Homemade granola can be stored for up to one month in an airtight container in a cool, dark place (like your pantry or kitchen cupboard).
Can I freeze homemade granola?
Yes! Freeze your homemade granola in an airtight container for up to 6 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, defrost at room temperature spread out on a baking sheet. Add it back into an airtight container for room temperature storage.
Is it cheaper to make granola?
Yes! Although the cost of seeds, nuts and drive fruit can be high, most store-bought granolas are far more expensive than making it yourself from scratch, especially if you’re buying organic or other granolas marketed as a healthy choice.
Is homemade granola good for you?
Yes! Making your own granola at home means you can control both the fat and sugar content and make sure it doesn’t contain any ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup or palm oil like some store-bought granolas do.
Ingredients for Homemade Granola
- large flake rolled oats
- ground cinnamon
- ground nutmeg
- nuts and seeds (we like pecans and pumpkin seeds)
- coconut oil
- liquid honey OR maple syrup
How to Make Homemade Granola
- Use large flake rolled oats. Quick oats aren’t best for granola because they’re already broken down into very small pieces. We like large flake rolled oats for the perfect granola texture.
- Choose your favourite sweetener. Honey or maple syrup are a great way to sweeten granola, and they’re a more natural choice than refined sugar.
- Toast at a low temperature. We bake this granola at 300 degrees Fahrenheit low and slow so it gets crispy and golden.
- Let it cool before storing. If you try to store hot granola in a jar or container it’ll get soggy really fast. Instead, let it cool on the baking sheet and then store it once it’s completely cooled.
- Stir in dried fruit AFTER baking. If you bake dried fruit like raisins or dried cranberries, it’ll get very hard and impossible to eat. If you want to add dried fruit to your granola, stir it in after baking while the granola is still warm.

I make this regularly but substitute olive oil for the coconut oil. It’s a great recipe for experimenting with different ingredients!
We’re so happy you enjoy it! Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback!
This looks so can’t wait to try it. Most granola I buy is to hard to just eat.
