1. Look for uniformity: The watermelon should be firm and symmetrical without any flat sides. It should also be free from bruises, cuts, or dents in the rind.
2. Choose round: Round watermelons are usually sweeter and have the most juice, compared to oval-shaped ones.
3. Pick it up: A ripe watermelon should feel heavy for its size, which indicates it’s full of water and will likely be nice and juicy.
4. Check the field spot: The spot where the melon rests on the ground as it grows in the field should be a creamy yellow colour. A white sport or a light green spot might mean it’s under ripe and won’t be very sweet.
5. Check the webbing: Ripe watermelons have a larger green pattern (called webbing). Watermelons with smaller webbing are known for being more on the bland side.
6. Go for dark skin: Dark green-skinned watermelons are usually sweeter and juicier than ones with light green skin. Bonus points if the skin is dull instead of shiny.
7. Tap it: Knock on the outside of the watermelon; a ripe watermelon will have a deep hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons tend to sound dull when you tap on the skin.
