It’s THAT tasty! It’s the perfect mango salsa for fish, chicken, tacos – whatever. Trust us, it’ll become one of your favourite recipes too!
Mango salsa is as vibrantly colourful as it is flavourful. It’s a homemade condiment that’s served over or alongside dishes like tacos, nachos or tortilla chips, grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon or other fish. It combines the sweetness of mangoes with savoury flavours of ingredients like avocado, jalapeño, red onion, cilantro, and lime juice.
It’s a popular dish in Tex-Mex cuisine and it’s widely available in restaurants that serve Mexican fusion dishes or grilled meats and fish.
If enjoying this Mango Avocado Salsa with a spoon isn’t your style, here are some dishes we love to serve with this delicious salsa:
- This Easy One Pan Cajun Salmon is so flavourful and a little bit spicy. We love this Mango Salsa for fish of any kind, but if you prefer chicken, this Easy Cajun Grilled Chicken is equally delicious!

Creating the best mango salsa starts with selecting the freshest ingredients. Here’s how to make sure you’re picking the best ingredients and preparing them correctly:
- Mangoes: Look for mangoes that are slightly soft to the touch but not mushy. A ripe mango will also smell sweet near the stem. The colour can vary so focus on feel and smell for ripeness.
- Avocados: Choose avocados that are just slightly soft. They should give a little under gentle pressure but not feel overly squishy. Overripe avocados will be too mushy in your salsa and will give a messy appearance.
- Red Onion: Opt for firm, bright-coloured onions with no soft spots. They should have a crisp, sharp aroma.
- Cilantro: Fresh cilantro should look vibrant and green without any yellow or wilted leaves.
- Jalapeños: If you prefer a milder salsa, look for larger jalapeños, which tend to be less spicy than smaller ones. Ensure they’re firm and shiny on the outside.
- Dice the Mango: Start by slicing off the sides of the mango, avoiding the large pit in the centre. Then, score the flesh in a square grid pattern without breaking the skin. Push the skin inside out and slice off the cubed pieces.
- Dice the Avocado: Cut the avocado in half lengthwise around the seed. Twist the halves to separate them. Remove the seed, then slice the flesh without piercing the skin. Scoop out the diced pieces with a spoon.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, add the diced mango, avocado, finely chopped red onion, minced jalapeño (optional), and a handful of chopped cilantro.
- Add Lime Juice and Season: Squeeze fresh lime juice over the mix and season with salt (and pepper, if desired). Gently toss to combine all the ingredients.
Pick out your favourite serving bowl and serve the salsa immediately after it’s prepared. Over time it will get soft and the avocados will brown, so it’s always best to serve it immediately after it’s prepared for best results.

- 2 fresh mangoes
- 2 fresh avocados
- 1 red onion
- 1 jalapeño pepper (an optional ingredient for those who like some heat)
- 2 tablespoons cilantro
- zest and juice of 1 lime
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoon olive oil
Try one of these delicious ways to give this salsa recipe a flavourful twist!
- Adjust the Heat: To increase the heat, add more jalapeños or include some of the seeds from the jalapeños. For a milder salsa, remove all the seeds or use bell peppers instead of jalapeños.
- Incorporate Different Fruits: For a tropical twist, mix in some diced pineapple or diced fresh peaches with the mango.
- Add Beans for Extra Protein: Black beans can add a savoury flavour and boost the protein content. Ensure they’re rinsed and drained if you’re using canned beans.
- Add Different Herbs: While cilantro is traditional, feel free to experiment with other fresh herbs like fresh mint or fresh basil for something different.
- Add Some Veggies: Diced cucumber can add an interesting texture and nutritional boost to your salsa, especially if you’re serving it over a salad.
- Increase the Spices and Seasonings: Add more cumin or add some chili powder, cayenne, or smoked paprika for some depth and warmth.

Follow these steps to make homemade mango avocado salsa.
- Dice the mangoes and avocados.
Peel and cut the mangoes and avocados into small 1/2 inch pieces and add them to a mixing bowl.

Gently toss the ingredients together and add the salsa to your favourite serving bowl.
- Serve and enjoy!
Serve with tortilla chips for dipping or serve alongside your favourite grilled chicken, fish, shrimp, or with tacos.
